Recently, the design work Automatic Cleaning Handle Public Hygiene Device by Xu Yang, Zhang Linhan, Xia Chenxiao and Yu Youhong, undergraduate students of class 2020 of Jiangnan University School of Design, won the 2021 iF Design Talent Award (iF Design Award is an international top-class competition, belonging to the category A discipline competition of Jiangnan Unversity). The award-winning design work is completed under the guidance of tutors Zhang Hanning and Huang Hao.
Automatic Cleaning Handle Public Hygiene Device is designed to provide hygiene solution in public transportation, as a means of addressing the concerns of the people and facilitate economic recovery in the city in the post-epidemic stage. The design work innovatively transforms the structure of handles in public transportation through transmission by physical gears, so that automatic rotation and sterilization can be realized when people’s hands left the handle. In this way, sterilized handles are provided for subsequent use. UV light is used to ensure thorough sterilization. The work is designed with physical structure, which is environmental-friendly and safe for use. It chooses PLA+PBS degradable plastic and memory plastic steel, which extend service life, reduce resource waste and environment pollution.
The iF Design Award, or "iF", was created in 1953 and is held annually by the iF Industrie Forum Design and is known as the world's three major design awards. It is known for its “independent, rigorous and reliable” awarding philosophy and aims to raise public awareness of design. It's Gold Award has the name of "Oscar Award of Product Design". iF Design Talent Award is specifically set up for students and is one of the top-ranking awards for students and young design talents across the world.
Over the years, the School of Design takes the cultivation of students with moral integrity as its founding mission. By leveraging the opportunities of discipline competitions, the School aims to equip the students with operational ability, self-learning ability and science-based mentality, so as to increase their overall strength, practise ability, innovative drive and teamwork spirit. The School will continue to push forward the education reform with innovation and entrepreneurship, and write new chapters for our work of practice-based education.
