In order to demonstrate the endless charm of Jiangsu cultural environment and highlight the extensiveness and profoundity of the Chinese language and culture, the South Jiangsu Division of 2016 Shared Joy in Jiangsu Chinese Speech Contest sponsored by the Press Office, the Education Department, and the Foreign Affairs Office of Jiangsu Provincial People's Government, and organized by the Broadcast and Television Station of Jiangsu Province, the Publicity Department of CPC Wuxi Municipal Committee, and Jiangnan University was held on May 18 at Jiangnan University. Leaders from the Jiangsu Provincial Government, Wuxi Municipal Government and Jiangnan University were present at the event.
Twenty-four contestants from twenty countries including the United States, Australia, Republic of Korea, Kazakhstan, Turkey, Cambodia, Ghana, etc. attended this contest. At present, these contestants study in seven colleges and universities in Jiangsu Province, including Jiangnan University, Suzhou University, Jiangsu University, Yangzhou University, Changzhou University, Changzhou Institute of Technology and Yangzhou Polytechnic Institute.
Focusing on such topics as “China and I”, “Chinese Language and I” and “My Chinese Dream”, the contestants presented their student life in China and their affinity with the Chinese language in the form of a 3-miniute speech. Professor Zhuang Ruojiang at Jiangnan University, Lu Meijuan, vice-dean at Nanjing Xiaozhuang University, Xiao Peng, chief announcer at Wuxi Radio & TV Station, Han Yajun, lecturer at Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics and Su Chang, anchorwoman at Jiangsu TV’s international channel served as judges. They gave marks on the basis of content, language expression, fluency, presentation skills, and appearance.
In fluent Chinese the contestants shared their study experience in China. Through stories related to Chinese food, culture, travel, study and life experience, the contestants expressed their love to China and Chinese culture and their wish to serve as bridges of friendship between China and other countries in the future.
To make this contest more enjoyable, Chinese and international students jointly gave some song and dance performances at this event. Fifteen models majoring in fashion show at School of Textile and Clothing of Jiangnan University in clothes designed by students of Jiangnan University brought the audience a visual impact of great beauty.
Finally, Nigerian Yu Fu, from Suzhou University, and Burmese Vincent, or Yang Zhengqiang, from Changzhou University, won the top prize and will attend the finals in Nanjing, the provincial capital of Jiangsu, this June.
