Sponsored by the International Joint Laboratory for BioInterfaces and Biological Detection between Jiangnan University and University of Michigan, the 1st Workshop on Nano-assembly & Functionalization is held at Jiangnan University from 24 May to 25 May 2016. With the theme on nanoscale self-assembly technology and functionalization of nanomaterials, this workshop has the presence of Chad A. Mirkin, a member of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science & Technology, the only chemist to be elected to all three US National Academies (the Institute of Medicine, the National Academy of Sciences, and the National Academy of Engineering) and a professor of Northwestern University of the United States, Jiang Lei, a world famous nano scientists and an academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Academician Zhao Dongyuan of Fudan university, and well-known scholars from National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, Nanjing University of Technology, Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry, Institute of Process Engineering, Institute of Chemistry of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Liu Xiaohong, Deputy Director of Institute of Science and Technology, Bian Zhengdong, Deputy Director of the International Office, and Zhou Peng, Vice Dean of School of Food Science and Technology.

Professor Xu Chuanlai from School of Food Science and Technology at Jiangnan University hosted the Opening Ceremony and the Closing Ceremony. Professor Jin Zhengyu, Vice President of Jiangnan University delivered a speech at the opening ceremony, pointing out that nano science and technology develops rapidly and has broad development prospects, and this conference will provide the academic world with a perfect opportunity for communication and will be beneficial to the discussion and understanding of nanotechnology from a global perspective as well as various social needs.

After the workshop, Professor Chen Jian, President of Jiangnan University met with Professor Chad A. Mirkin, welcoming him to visit Jiangnan University and hoping to carry out substantial cooperation with the US side. After the meeting, Professor Chad A. Mirkin visited the Zhishan Innovation Team Laboratory on Food Safety at Jiangnan University. He made positive comments on the research objective and achievements of the team and expressed his wish to carry out the application-oriented nano biological detection research and development together with Jiangnan University.
