Prof. Josef Kittler Wins the Jiangsu Provincial Award for International Cooperation 2015

On 26 February 2016, the Award Ceremony for the 2015 Jiangsu Provincial Award for International Cooperation in Science and Technology was held in Nanjing, the provincial capital of Jiangsu. Main leaders of CPC Jiangsu Provincial Committee and the Provincial Government including Luo Zhijun, Shi Taifeng and Zhang Lianzhen attended the ceremony and conducted award presentation to the award winners. Altogether 6 foreign experts won the 2015 Jiangsu Provincial Award for International Cooperation in Science and Technology. Professor Josef Kittler, co-director of the International Joint Laboratory for Pattern Recognition and Computational Intelligence at Jiangnan University is one of the foreign experts who win this special honor. Professor Josef Kittler, Fellow of the British Royal Academy of Engineering, former President of the International Association for Pattern Recognition, and Distinguished Professor of the Department of Electronic Engineering at University of Surrey, obtained Ph.D. in Pattern Recognition (1974), and ScD (1992), all from University of Cambridge. Professor Kittler has made outstanding contributions in the field of pattern recognition. His research mainly includes the theory of pattern recognition, image analysis and computer vision, as well as system identification, automatic testing, analysis of ECG diagnosis, breast X-ray image understanding, remote sensing, robotics, speech recognition, font recognition and file processing, image coding, biometrics, image and video data recovery and monitoring, and other applied researches. He has published more than 600 high quality academic papers and won a dozen international awards.

In his cooperation with Jiangsu Province, Professor Josef Kittler, as the co-director of the International Joint Laboratory for Pattern Recognition and Computational Intelligence at Jiangnan University, by working together with the team headed by Professor Wu Xiaojun of School of Internet of Things at Jiangnan University, has jointly supervised several PhD candidates and young teachers, and published quite a few high-quality papers. Having visited Jiangnan University many times, Professor Kittler works as the academic master of the Innovation and Brainpower Import Base "Industrial Process Intelligent Control" under the "111 Plan" of the Chinese Ministry of Education and has achieved a series of encouraging results in the international exchange and cooperation and many other aspects.
