On 3 June 2016, School of Design at Jiangnan University held the 2016 Graduation Design Exhibition---“Design for Change” at Wuxi Museum. Vice President Xu Yan, leaders from Wuxi Municipal Government, distinguished guests from other universities and enterprises as well as faculty members and students from the School of Design attended the opening ceremony.
Professor Zhang Linghao, Dean of School of Design, in his speech points out that the theme of this graduation design --- “Design for Change” is relevant to today's restructuring of design education based on problems of different complexity, and the design-driven innovative thinking is increasingly involved in business and further in the sustainable social transformation.
Professor Xu Yan, Vice President of Jiangnan University, delivered a speech on behalf of the University, hoping that all the students can be reflective practitioners, using design tools and processes to rethink the whole way of life and the future development of products, facilities, environment, health and food system, and actively supporting the social and environmental changes. He also hopes that the School of Design, with its own advantages, can make design an important force to promote the development of the country.
Altogether about 440 graduates coming from different majors and the Integrated Innovation Experimental Class finished about 440 works of design for the exhibition, including 136 pieces of industrial design, 90 pieces of visual communication design, 98 pieces of environmental design, 14 pieces of public art design, 37 pieces of architectural design, 41 pieces of fine arts, and 27 pieces of works from the Integrated Innovation Experimental Class. The exhibits include household appliances, vehicles, home furniture, interactive products and services, brand image, graphics design, text design, packaging design, book design, media APP design and advertising planning, interior design, architectural design, landscape planning, public art installation, sculpture, ceramics, oil paintings, Chinese paintings, and many other areas. This graduation design exhibition melts the graduates’ thinking about the future social form and way of life, and shows the understanding and interpretation of the teachers and students for sustainable development, ecology, environmental protection, technology and innovation.
This graduation design exhibition attracted wide attention from domestic universities, relevant industries and enterprises, and cultural and creative institutions. Design for change not only means new development of the design knowledge, ability and methods, but also the possibility to trigger thinking, reviewing the original purpose of design which is not only the success of the commercial products, but also to create a new world for the public by shouldering the design-driven responsibility of promoting the sustainable development of the society.
