On account of the discovery of prostaglandin and leukotrienes, he was awarded 1982 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

JU President Chen Jian, together with a couple of JU faculty members including Director Zhongfang from International Office, Dean Chen Wei from School of Food Science, and Director Chen Yongquan from Food and Health Research Center, had a meeting with the delegation. President Chen briefed the delegation our recent approaches and the development of talent cultivation, faculty construction and scientific research. Prof. Bengt Samuelsson gave a brief account of the Karolinska Institute and particularly the development in research in basic science. During the meeting, the two sides agreed to deepen cooperative relations in a wider range.

Afterwards, in addition to another meeting with Vice President Xu Yan and a visit to the School of Food Science and the State Lab of Food Science and Technology, Prof. Samuelsson had a discussion with Prof. Chen Yongquan--a national prestigious “One Thousand Talents Project” winner-- and his research team. Additionally, he gave a lecture entitled “The Role of Basic Science in the Development of New Medicines” for over 200 faculty members and students in the related fields from JU’s School of Food Science and Technology, School of Biotechnology, School of Medicine and School of Pharmacy. He elaborated the forward-looking significance of basic science research in new drug development, and shared his remarkable achievements in lipid peroxidation research. He encouraged the students to be good problem finders, problem thinkers and problem solvers.
