On the morning of May 2nd, the founding celebration of "Lun Shiyi Education Fund" was held at the multi-function hall on the fifth floor of JU’s library. It witnessed the presence of Mr. Lun Shiyi, an member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Professor Chen Jian, President of Jiangnan University, Professor Gu Zhengbiao, Vice-president of JU and the director of School Education Development Foundation, Professor Wang Wu, the former director of School Education Development Foundation, Lin Yunjian, Secretary-General of School Education Development Foundation, Huang Zhuangxia, Party Secretary of School of Biotechnology, Du Guocheng, Dean of School of Biological Engineering, and more than 150 alumni supporting the fund.
As a host of the celebration, Dean Du Guocheng briefed on the preparations for the fund. Also, JU Vice President Gu Zhengbiao extended warm congratulations for the establishment of the fund and President Chen Jian expressed his heartfelt thanks to the JU alumni for their supports in a speech. Delegates at the celebration voted to adopt the chart and organizations of the fund. Afterwards, President Chen Jian and Mr.Lun Shiyi jointly inaugurated the fund, and, together with Vice President Gu Zhengbiao, they declared 67 members of the fund council.
Apart from his sincere thanks to the alumni for their long-term support, Mr. Lun, in a speech, emotionally retrospect the history and founding background of Biological System and Bio-processing Engineering Laboratory, and urged the young generation to work hard so as to make China a world power in fermentation industry.
Mr. Lun Shiyi is a professor and doctoral supervisor of JU, and was elected academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1995. Since 1985, he has successively served as a member of the 1st, 2nd, 3rdand 4thterm Academic Degrees Committee (ADC) of the State Council, and the convener for ADC’s Textile and Light Industry Panel. He focuses on and has been making fruitful results in fermentation engineering and environmental biotechnology. He has been working at JU since college graduation, and is one of the founders of JU’s fermentation engineering discipline.
As an affiliate to Jiangnan University Education Development Foundation, "Lun Shiyi Education Fund" is named after Mr. Lun Shiyi and run by the board of the fund in accordance with its charter. The fund is all raised by the alumni from the Biological Systems and Bioprocess Engineering Laboratory established by Mr. Lun. The lab now has turned out eight post-doctoral researchers, 84 PHD, 186 masters as well as a large number of undergraduates, including 44 professors and researchers working at many China’s major universities and research institutes, 3 National Outstanding Youth Foundation Winner, 2 Changjiang Scholar Professor, 1 National Winner of Outstanding Youth Fund. So far, up to 177 people have contributed with more than 310 million yuan in total. The fund is a nonexpendable fund and JU,on a yearly basis, supports with an extra 10 percent of the total amount of previous year's fund as an annual special fund.
With a purpose of keeping the spirit of hard-working, dedication and excellence-pursuing manifested in JU’s fermentation engineering people, "Lun Shiyi Education Fund" is aimed to support personnel training in the discipline of fermentation engineering so as to encourage the students to study hard and develop in an all-round manner. The fund is mainly used to reward and support the outstanding and underprivileged students as well as outstanding young scholars in the field of domestic fermentation engineering from JU’s School of Biotechnology for the realization of making China a world power in the related fields.
