On 10 November 2015, the meeting for the project initialization assessment of the International Joint Research Laboratory for Food Safety was held at Jiangnan University. The assessment experts include Academician Li Defa from China Agricultural University, Academician Wang Guangji from China Pharmaceutical University, Academician Zhang Si from South China Sea Institute of Oceanology at Academia Sinica, Professor Chen Feng from Peking University, Professor Zhang Heping from Inner Mongolia Agricultural University, Professor Zhao Mouming from South China University of Technology, Professor Jiang Lianzhou from Northeast Agricultural University, Professor Liu Jingbo from Jilin University, and Professor Wang Xichang from Shanghai Ocean University. Director Jia Yiwei and Ms. Li Renjie of College High-tech Industry Division of the Development Center at China’s Ministry of Education, President Chen Jian, Vice President Jin Zhengyu, Vice President Xu Yan, and leaders from the International Office, Institute of Science and Technology, the State Key Laboratory, School of Food Science of Jiangnan University and professor representatives from collaborating foreign universities and relevant faculty members attended the assessment meeting.

The meeting was chaired by Director Jia Yiwei who in the beginning introduced the participating leaders and experts and the meeting schedule, announcing the establishment of the expert panel. Vice President Xu Yan delivered a welcome speech on behalf of Jiangnan University. In his speech, Xu Yan said that Jiangnan University attached great importance to establishing international joint research laboratories and would give strong support in terms of system, mechanism, policy and investment.

Academician Li Defa presided over the assessment. Professor Jin Zhengyu, Director of the International Joint Research Laboratory for Food Safety reported to the expert panel about the aim, significance, organization, infrastructure, representative achievements, operation and management, development plan for the next 3 years of the laboratory. The expert panel conducted an on-the-spot investigation on the workshops of the laboratory experts, the platform for research and innovation, the scientific research base, and the lab large-scale instrument sharing platform, and heard the introduction about the scientific research and international exchange and cooperation of the lab members.

After the discussion and voting of the expert panel, Director Jia Yiwei announced the assessment result: the expert panel unanimously holds that this laboratory have carried out substantive scientific and technological cooperation, professional personnel training and collaborative innovation with foreign partners, obtaining a series of cooperation achievements; With a clear goal and appropriate measures, the laboratory is up to the standard of project initialization for the international joint research laboratory of Ministry of Education. The expert panel also suggested that the laboratory increase investment, speed up the process of internationalized scientific research, internationalized professional personnel training, and the construction of internationalized management operation mechanism, striving to build it into a world-class joint laboratory.

Relying on the State Key Laboratory for Food Science and Technology at Jiangnan University, the International Joint Research Laboratory for Food Safety is established in collaboration with UC Davis, Purdue University, University of Georgia, Cornell University, United States Department of Agriculture, and Canadian Department of Agriculture, aiming to gather international resources, build a first-class innovation team, lead the development in the field of food safety and nutrition in the world, and become a center with global influence of scientific research, professional personnel training as well as cooperation and exchange.
