From 24 to 26 April 2016, the 7th International Workshop of China-Scotland Signal and Image Processing Research Academy (SIPRA) is held at Jiangnan University. Over 200 well-known experts and scholars as well as representatives of faculty members and students in the field of computer science from home and abroad attend the meeting. Professor Gu Zhengbiao, Vice President of Jiangnan University, attends the opening ceremony and delivers a welcome speech. Professor Wu Xiaojun, Director of the Institute of Science and Technology of Jiangnan University hosts the opening ceremony.

This workshop aims to discuss the cutting-edge technology of signal and image processing, pattern recognition, the big data technology and the Internet of Things Technology for the smart city construction, etc. The participating experts and scholars carry out in-depth discussion and communication on the subject of their concern.

Twenty-four well-known experts and scholars including Professor Tan Tieniu, Vice President and Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Josef Kittler, Academician of the UK Royal Academy of Engineering, Professor Tariq S Durrani, Academician of Scotland’s National Academy for Science and Letters, Professor Liu Chenglin, Director of the National Laboratory of Pattern Recognition, Institute of Automation of Chinese Academy of Sciences, winner of the National Outstanding Youth Fund and IEEE Fellow, Professor Xin Yao, IEEE Fellow, Yaochu Jin, IEEE Fellow, Professor Yang Jian, Cheung Kong Scholar and winner of the National Outstanding Youth Fund, etc. are present at the workshop and make keynote speeches.

Professor Tan Tieniu, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, holds that pattern recognition is the core component of artificial intelligence and the key intelligent technology in the big data era. Meanwhile, Professor Tan points out that the great potentiality of pattern recognition remains to be further tapped.

Professor Josef Kittler, Academician of the UK Royal Academy of Engineering, focusing on anomaly detection which is an important mechanism in machine perception, points out the flaws in the existing standard tools in anomaly detection, and proposes a new detection method for the classifier inconsistency. This technology can achieve effective application in the intelligent video monitoring of smart cities.

Professor Tariq S Durrani, Academician of Scotland’s National Academy for Science and Letters, analyzes the research background of big data and the application of big data in signal processing and smart city construction, pointing out the relationship between big data and industrial sensing equipment as well as signal processing, and introducing the signal processing technology based on the graph theory in the process of big data processing.

Professor Wu Xiaojun and Professor Li Chaofeng of Jiangnan University co-chair the workshop. Professor Sun Jun of Jiangnan University is invited to make a keynote speech. The meeting decides to select some papers to be published in a special collection of Cognitive Computation, a world-famous SCI journal.
