Three Achievements of JU Obtained the 2014 National Science and Technology Award

On the morning of January 9, 2015, the 2014 National Science and Technology Awards Conference was held in the Great Hall of the People where China's party and state leaders including Xi Jinping、Li Keqiang、Liu Yunshan and Zhang Gaoli were present and awarded the representatives of the winners.

The 3 achievements of JU obtained the National Science and Technology Awards. Among them, 2 achievements in food research with JU served as the leading unit obtained the Second Prize of the National Technological Invention Award and the other achievement with JU’s participation obtained the Second Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award.

The project of “The Creation of New Starch Derivatives and Green manufacturing of Traditional Starch Derivatives” (JU as the leading unit), led by Professor Jin Zhengyu and Professor Gu Zhengbiao, obtained the Second Prize of the National Technological Invention Award. Based on the project, the research group created a new type of dextrin starch derivatives with flexible embedding structure—spring dextrin, DP20-40 macro cyclodextrin and some branch cyclodextrin such as galactosyl-β- cyclodextrin; created zero-formaldehyde high-performance starch-glue-stick-type starch derivatives; and created the technology of creating a couple of modified starch derivatives such as crosslinking and esters by employing one-step-methods (dry method and enzyme method) instead of traditional chemical wet process, avoiding or greatly reducing sewage disposal; created a new energy-saving production process of starchy-carbohydrates-type starch derivatives characterized with reduction of steam consumption.This achievement is widely recognized by domestic and overseas experts in related fields. The technology has reached an internationally leading level. It was applied in many enterprises such as Xiwang Group Limited Company, promoting the development of science and technology in the starch deep-processing industry.

The project of “The development and application of edible oil adsorption material based on the dry method activation” (JU as the leading unit), led by Professor Wang Xingguo, obtained the Second Prize of the National Technological Invention Award. Based on this project, the research group focused on trace multicomponent oil phase adsorption mechanismand the effect of decoloring on the quality of oil product, finding that attapulgite clay with appropriate structure of micropore and nanorod crystal attribute is the ideal material for oil adsorption decolorization; created dry process of activation, and found Special adsorption materials as well as created a "two step" decoloring process meeting with the property of the material. Through this project, 7 high-tech enterprises have been incubated, and the adsorption material produced and the new process of decolorization has been widely applied in many products of some large domestic enterprises such as Kerry’s “Golden Dragon Fish” and China Oil & Foodstuffs Corporation’s “Fortune”.

The project of “The key technology of high efficient cotton combing and its industrialized application”, accomplished with the participation of Professor Gao Weidong’s team obtained the Second Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award.

In the general projects’ statistical ranking for China’s institutions of higher learning (released by the Ministry of Education), based on the leading units obtaining the 2014 National Science and Technology Awards, JU was ranked the 10th nationwide and tied the second in Jiangsu Province.
