Yesterday, according to the message from Jiangnan University (JU), the results of 2014 National College Mathematical Contest in Modeling & Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling (MCM/ICM) was announced. In this competition, the team of JU had competed together with other 6740 teams from domestic and abroad institutions of higher learning such as Harvard University, Princeton University, Tsinghua University and Peking University. In total, the eight teams of JU won three first prizes and five second prizes, the best performance ever of JU since 2011 when JU first took part in the competition.

As a long-term international contest, MCM/ICM, held by the Consortium for Mathematics and Its Application, focuses on solving practical problems in various fields and emphasizes the originality of the research and solutions. With its long history and great influence, the MCM/ICM has become the world’s most authoritative international cross-institution and cross-discipline mathematical modeling contest. In this contest, three students of each team were required to select one of topics provided by the contest, model and submit a paper written in English.

In recent years, by making use of the platform of mathematical modeling, JU has paid close attention to cultivate students’ innovation capacity, practical ability, teamwork and English writing, proceeding from training students’ capacity of raising, analyzing and solving problems. All the work, including the improvement of the contest training system, the construction of the teaching team and the selection of students, has been carrying out in a down-to-earth way, achieving satisfying outcomes and maintaining competitive advantages. Especially in 2006, JU became the first Jiangsu-province-based institution of higher learning to win the “Higher Education Press Cup” China Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling (CUMCM). Since 2011, students of JU have been showing their talents and abilities on the international stage. As a result, a large number of outstanding students with strong mathematical application ability have constantly emerged and this plays a positive role in promoting training high-level innovative talents with international competitiveness.
