On the afternoon of May 31st, there held a grand inaugural ceremony to establish the “Yao Huiyuan and Hu Yuqin Million-RMB Love Fund” Council. This fund was initiated by a couple, Yao Huiyuan and Hu Yuqin, both of whom once were senior professors as well as alumni of JU’s School of Food Science and Technology. With JU Vice-president Gao Weidong hosting the ceremony, JU’s president Chen Jian, Prof. Yao Huiyuan, as well as more than 60 contributors attended the gathering and some of the contributors had also sent congratulatory letters to express their sincere wish.
In his speech, President Chen Jian, after expressing his congratulations on the starting of the fund, looked back on the course of how the couple finally made it. Proceeding from their idea of “benefiting the society and passing love”, they had been calling for donations and had received a wide range of public response, raising a large amount fund much more than expected. President Chen in turn requested the students obtaining the support of the fund to “behave with gratefulness” and to “work with responsibilities”.
The fund constitution (draft) and the organizational framework of the fund were approved by the voting of the representatives. President Chen Jian awarded Prof. Yao with a gratitude board and a donation certificate of honor, and presented the contributors from industry certificates of honor. Later on, he unveiled the nameplate of the fund together with Prof. Yao.
As the initiator of the fund and a “food science elder”, Prof. Yao shared his life experience with the attendees. He believes the most important thing for a teacher is to pay more attention to students and their development with a caring heart. Being a senior food science teacher, he thought it necessary and meaningful to “leave something to the coming generations”. Based on these ideas, he advocated and initiated the “Million-RMB Love Fund” to convey love and to encourage food science majors, so as to realize the “Dream of Making China Powerful with Food Science”.
As a veteran of food science and technology, he put forward three valuable advice to the development of Chinese Food Science: To make JU’s Food Science and Technology distinctive by an internationally high-level standard; to create a culture among food science researchers, characteristic with “responsibility, deep thinking, honesty, piety, kindness and public awareness”; to realize the training objective of “cultivating high-end talents to serve the industry”.
On the ceremony, some JU food science majors had been award the-first-time scholarships of “Yao Huiyuan and Hu Yuqin’s Million-RMB Love Fund”.
After the ceremony, focusing on the theme “To Promote the Realization of Powerful China by Passing Food S&T Love” , Prof. Yao and 12 other warm hearted personnel respectively gave speeches from various point of views to guide the student for career planning and to plot the blueprint of the food S&T. They were JU’s Vice-president Jin Zhengyu, Prof. Qu Lingbo, Vice-president of Henan University of Technology, Zhang Jianhua, a researcher and the deputy secretary of party committee of COFCO(China Oil and Foodstuffs Corporation), Prof. Ju Xingrong, Vice-president of Nanjing University of Finance and Economics, Feng Gaoshen, General manager of Wuxi Buhler Group, Wang Qing, a researcher and the deputy director of Institute of Agro-products and Processing Science and Technology Caas, Zhang Mingwei, a researcher and the director of Guangdong Academy of agricultural Science Agrotechny, Prof. Chen Wei, Prof. Chen Yongquan, Prof. Wang Xingguo, Prof. Zhang Min and Prof. Xu Chuanlai from JU’s School of Food Science and Technology.
Prof. Yao belongs to the first batch of doctoral supervisors of cereal, oil and vegetable protein engineering in our country. He is also the first dean of School of Food Science and Technology. He has been devoted himself into the Fine and Further Processing of Cereal education, a major of Food Science and Technology, yielding numerous outstanding talents in the related fields cross the world. He has won many honors like “National Outstanding Teacher”, “National Excellent Science and Technology Worker”, “Outstanding Contribution Award of JU Alumni”. To fullfill his late wife Hu Yuqin’s last wish, Prof. Yao donated 500 thousands RMB to start “Yao Huiyuan and Hu Yuqin’s Million-RMB Love Fund”. Their philanthropic act had been arousing a heat response and up to now the total amount of the fund had been raised to 21.5 million. Now the fund has become a part of JU education development fund and the annual interest will be used to award and support food science majors. The fund is tended to devote love to the education of the Alma Mater in order to encourage the students from School of Food Science and Technology to strive and work hard, and to realize their Dream with joint efforts.
