On May 30, The 10thInternational conference of Food Science and Technology (ICFST) was held at Jiangnan University (JU), which attracted 600-plus attendees including more 40 renowned foreign scholars from America, England, Australia, Canada, Italy, Ireland, Korea, Japan, Thailand, etc. It’s also an important gathering for Chinese counterparts in the Food area with the attendance of some University Presidents or Vice Presidents, Deans and faculty members from Schools of Food Science in 50-odd China’s institutions of higher learning, and representatives from Food industry.
Hosted by JU Vice President Xu Yan, its opening ceremony arranged a lot of warm speeches by many important figures including JU President Chen Jian, Prof. William Lacy, Vice Chancellor of UC Davis, Prof. Sun Baoguo, an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and also Vice President of Beijing Technology and Business University, Prof. Yue Guojun, Chief Engineer of China Oil and Foodstuffs Corporation, Professor Meng Suhe, President of Council of Chinese Institute of Food Science and Technology, Lei Fengyun, Deputy Director of Department of Education, Science, Culture and Health, State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs, and Wang Zhe, Deputy Director of Rural Science and Technology, Ministry of Science and Technology.
With the theme of “Better Foods, Better Life”, the conference was aimed at exploring the cutting-edge fields of Food Science and strengthening academic exchanges and cooperation in related fields. It provided 12 topics including Probiotics and Intestine Health, Dairy Food Science and Technology, Food Metabonomics, Food and Health, Food Biotechnology, Food Chemistry, Food Colloid, Food Safety and Analysis, Food Nanotechnology, Cereal Science and Technology, Aquatic Product Processing Technology, and Novel Technology of Food Processing. It also set a Postgraduate Forum, a Young Scientists Forum and an Academic Paper Writing and Publication Session, and arranged 120 oral academic reports and 150 post presentations.
An initiative is The Development Forum for International Food Higher Education with the topic of “Innovation and Internationalization for Food Talent Cultivation”. JU President Chen Jian and Vice President William Lacy of UC Davis jointly hosted the forum, at which Deans from the School of Food Science across the world and their Chinese counterparts exchanged views on Social Demand for Food Talents, Food Professional Cultivation and Internationalization to explore the basic laws for professional cultivation, to form the educational patterns and to promote the overall level of Food Higher Education.
A special forum was held to commemorate Mr. Wang Zhang, a late JU Professor of the School of Food Science and Technology, for his contributions to talent cultivation and scientific research of JU’s Food Discipline and the founding of the ICFST.
Another spotlight of the conference is the participation of the Food Industry including many established enterprises such as COFCO, Bright Dairy, Jiangsu Yurun, DuPont Nutrition & Health, Anjoy Food, realizing the interaction between the industries and the universities.
Jointly established by JU and UC Davis, ICFST is an international conference started in Wuxi in 1991 and held every 2 to 3 years since then. Covering various fields in Food Science, ICFST, with its increasing impact, has become a grand platform characteristic with discussion, exchange and informal meeting for Food scientists both at home and abroad.
