Practicing Sportsmanship for a Healthy Life—2012 Sports Meet at JU

On November 18 when Jiangnan University (JU) is a place brimming with cozy sunshine and osmanthus fragrance, the opening ceremony of 2012 Jiangnan University Autumn Sports Festival and the 12th Track and Field Sports Meet was grandly held.

This ceremony was presided over by Vice President Fu Huiming, and was graced with the attendance of JU leaders including President Chen Jian, Vice President Fu Huiming, Tian Bei and Feng Biao, and Assistant President Wu Zhengguo and Zhang Chi, directors of relative administrative departments, deans of different schools, and members of the organizing committee of the sports festival and the sports meet.

It started with a March-in ceremony. With an exciting music—The Sportsmen March, the national flag guard of honor, the flag of the sports meet guard of honor and the emblem guard of honor, first passed the platform in orderly and robust steps for reviewing, which fully showcased an active sports spirit. Then, Referee Team, together with athletes from different schools, also passed with a high spirit in their neat uniforms. A creative and spectacular team performance, brought by the members from the Graduate School, the School of Design, the School of IOT Engineering and the School of Humanities, won rounds of applause. In the end, the audience has been showing great tribute and clapping enthusiastically when The Sunset Glow team, consisting of the retired staff and faculty members, showed up.

Afterward, aflag-raising ceremony was conducted, at which all the present stood up and solemnly sang the Chinese national anthem, watching the national flag rising slowly. President Chen Jian extended a warm opening ceremony speech, in which he pointed out that sports is an important carrier by which to achieve the goal of cultivating high-level talents and conveying the merits of advanced cultures, and is beneficial to develop physical fitness and favorable spirituality for the students, which is the very reason why JU has been advocating sportsmanship and promoting sports activities at the university level under a motto of “A Hobby for Each student, A Team for Each Class and A Match for Each Week”. It’s been working successfully in promoting sportsmanship as a pilot program carried out at the School of Food Science and Technology and the School of Business. President Chen also hoped that all JU people should realize themselves and pursue personal happiness through work-out and athletic competitions, start to exercise by running, jumping and walking under the sportsmanship, and hone their willpower, promote a team spirit, develop favorable atmosphere and enjoy the happiness from the sports. At last, he called for the active participation of all faculty, staff and students to enjoy the happiness from the sports, give a full display for this activity, and convey the sportsmanship to all JU people.

Zhang He, a student from the School of IOT Engineering, on behalf of all the participating athletes, took an oath that they would make the most to fully demonstrate the sportsmanship and their athletic competitiveness, and Gong Ning, on behalf all the judges, pledged that they would make the competition a fair play.

A group performance namedThe Coolest Ethnic Trend, choreographed and directed respectively by Yang Li and Zhou Zheng, faculty members from the School of Sports, aroused all the audience’s attention and reached a climax of the whole ceremony. It demonstrated the youthful spirituality and energy, and showed distinct charm with ceaseless changeable shapes and colors, which ended the ceremony in a festive atmosphere.

The sports meet has been lasted for two days, with events including fields events, tracks events, ball games, etc. (C.Y. and Patrick)
