On the afternoon of October 17th, Mr. WU Guilong, Chancellor of Jiangnan University (JU), along with other leaders from School of IoT Engineering, Publicity Department and Chancellor’s Office, visited student dormitory and paid tribute to two outstanding students with disabilities from School of IoT Engineering. The two outstanding students are Zhang Ningzhuo, a freshman from Automation Department, and Zhang Lidong, a master candidate of School of IoT Engineering.
Chancellor Wu first visited Zhang Ningzhuo’s dorm and congratulated him on his admission of School of Honor (school for selected top students of different schools at JU). Zhang Ningzhuo was born in Nanjing and survived a serious disease at three years old although he lost his hearing abilities. Chancellor Wu chatted with Mr. Zhang and his roommates in a friendly way and inquired about his study and life at JU. Mr. Zhang’s dedication to study and determination to face hardships impressed Chancellor Wu and other leaders deeply. Chancellor Wu expressed his admiration of Mr. Zhang’s will to study all the way through with other students and encouraged him to participate student association activities so as to fit in with other people. Afterwards, Chancellor Wu visited Mr. Zhang Lidong, a paralyzed master candidate who got a direct entry into graduate study, and appreciated his works of Chinese calligraphy. As well, Chancellor Wu talked with Mr. Zhang’s mother to know about his upbringing, schooling as well as future plan. Mr. Zhang expressed his gratitude for JU’s concern and care in the past four years and wished that he can do his part to make contributions to our society in return.
The two remarkable students conquered their disabilities and made a real difference in their life and study. Zhang Ningzhuo attended schools with other students from the very beginning of his schooling. To understand words and communicate with others, he did all he can to read lips and express himself from vibration of lips to tell words. In 2011, Zhang Ningzhuo left Nanjing for the first time and came to Jiangnan University. The help from his teachers and classmates guaranteed his study and independent life at JU. Moreover, he proved himself with his achievements of scholarships and outstanding academic record which was ranked 14th among 158 students (top 8.8%) and qualified him to enroll at School of Honor.
The other remarkable student is Zhang Lidong, a paralyzed master candidate from Wuxi. He is on wheelchair but is determined and very into calligraphy which can be testified by his work at the Memorial of Dr.Gu Yuxiu. In 2008, he began to study Computer Science and Technology at JU and amazingly got a direct entry into graduate study after four years in 2012. For all the time, Zhang Lidong has been positive and optimistic about life. Meanwhile, he set demanding academic standards for himself and considered himself living up to his standards only if he was the top three in his class. In the past four years, he was honored with scholarships and awards of different levels including JU scholarships, national scholarships, Student of The Year as well as Graduate of The Year in JU. From 2012 to 2012, despite his disability, he volunteered in Chinese University Students Outsourcing Innovation Application Contest and worked more than ten hours a day for three consecutive summer vacations.
The two disabled but remarkable students highlight the spirit which is in urgent need for Chinese young people. They are the reflections of JU’s motto, “Leaning and Practice to Perfection”, as well as the role models to motivate JU students to strive for academic excellence and a real difference in their life.(Patrick)
