On November 24, 2012, there held a greeting meeting at the lecture hall of Gongyi Library in Jiangnan University (JU) for the reunion of the first ten-year postgraduates (1978-1987) while china started to implement the opening-up policy, which had attracted more than 150 postgraduate alumni back to JU from all over the world. A lot of JU faculty members, including 10 highly respected then-supervisors, a number of JU leaders and chiefs of JU’s related administrative departments and schools, attended the meeting, which was presided over by Prof. Xu Yan, Vice President of JU.
In the meeting, Chancellor Wu Guilong, on behalf of JU, extended a warm welcome to the alumni, and gave a brief introduction of the development of JU over the years. During the twenty-plus years since their graduation, China has been making great changes thanks to the implementation of China's opening-up policy. Meanwhile, their Alma Mater has also experienced many grand events such as its renaming, becoming a national“211 Project University” and a university under the direct supervision of China’s Ministry of Education, establishing a new Jiangnan University incorporating with two other universities, and constructing a new campus for the new JU. By relentless efforts to promote innovation, JU has been developing in an all-around way, boasting among the universities with fastest development in China, and enjoying a considerable reputation both at home and abroad.
"With eyes blinking, thirty years have been passed. I hope you would look back on your youth and discuss freely to have a good time back at JU.” Mr. Wu said.
Afterward, JU President Chen Jian, also a Grade 1984 postgraduate, stated that JU, over the recent years, has been making great achievements with the development in an all-around manner and achieving an increasing influence nationwide even internationlly; And JU, under the Guidance ofOutline of the National Program for Long- and Medium-Term Education Development, will strengthen educational connotation construction, enhance scientific research integrative capacity, increase the number of postgraduate, and serve the development of the local economy, accomplishing its aim to be a high-level university with distinctive features in the near future. He also expressed gratitude for the selfless dedication and support by JU postgraduate alumni in the end of his speech.
Professor Zhang Kechang from the School of Biotechnology, held in high esteem by students, on behalf of all the supervisors, warmly welcome the students’come-back. He, filled with emotion, said that all the supervisors had been also paying close attention to the students since their graduation, and they were very happy to know that the students are qualified enough to take grand responsibilities in different fields. He also recalled some anecdotes, and showed great expectations for them to keep in mind the teachers’ instruction, cherish what they’ve received from their Al Mater, and make greater contribution to the society.
Shi Yuwen, a Grade 1979 postgraduate, and Wang Dihui, a Grade 1985 postgraduate, on behalf of all the alumni attendees, said that it was a great opportunity for them to communicate with their former classmates and the supervisors, and they, in particular, were appreciated for the rapid development of JU. They sincerely hoped that the supervisors would enjoy a good health, and JU would have a brighter future. Subsequently, Wu Di and Ouyang Shenjun, two postgraduate candidates, performed a poetry reading show, impressing all the present with their confidence and spirits.
Year 2012 is JU’s 110-year anniversary to start its education, also a 54-year anniversary for its independent education. A celebrating part specially designed for JU’s anniversary and the birthday of two tutors and 20 alumni who were born in November, hosted by Chancellor Wu and President Chen Jian, pushed the meeting to a festival-like climax.
The last part--a group picture shooting in front of JU’s library brought a successful end for this greeting meeting.
