On the morning of June 1, a delegation from Wuxi Development & Reform Commission, Wuxi Education Bureau, Wuxi Finance Bureau, Wuxi Science and Technology Bureau, Wuxi Health Bureau, Wuxi Hospital Administration Centre, under the leadership of Mr. Zhu Kejiang, Acting Mayor of Wuxi, also vice Secretary of CPC Wuxi, Ms. Hua Boya, Deputy Mayor, Mr. Wu Fengfeng, Chief Secretary of Wuxi Municipal Government, visited Jiangnan University (JU) for inspection and investigation.
Leaders of JU, Wu Guilong, Chen Jian, Feng Biao, Gao Weidong, Zhou Xiaopu, Ji Zhicheng, Fu Huiming, Xu Yan, Tian Bei, and chiefs of certain departments, were all present at the conference held during the visit. In the conference, hosted by Chancellor of JU Wu Guilong, Prof. Chen, President of JU, summarized in the report entitled “Talent Cultivation, Technological Innovation, Social Service and Cultural Inheritance” various aspects of JU, from the achievements in the respects of scientific research, academics and talent cultivation accomplished during the Eleventh 5-year period to the targets in the areas of high-end teaching faculty construction and high-level scientific research.
To serve Wuxi, during the Eleventh 5-year period, JU finished a strategic shift in disciplinary distribution and established the School of Medicine & Pharmaceutics, the School of Environmental & Civil Engineering, the School of Digital Media, the School of Humanities, the School of IoT Engineering, to comply with the strategic layouts of Wuxi and China at large. JU also took part in the national dedicated project——waters’ contamination control and treatment, which was an integral component of the regional innovation system of Wuxi. Reliant on intelligence and technology, aiming at solving practical problems, JU took the initiative in serving the economic and social development of Wuxi. Besides, JU was committed to the inheritance and innovation of the local culture of Wuxi, hence one of the most important cultural name cards and one important source of innovation. During the Twelfth 5-year period, JU plans to foster innovation of various industries by depending on its disciplinary superiority, to build an innovative-talent highland by capitalizing on talent advantages, to forcefully promote the development of the School of IoT Engineering, to push joint projects between Wuxi and JU, to further the building of joint institutes and Wuxi Medical School. Aside from that, President Chen expressed his wish for more substantial support from the government of Wuxi toward the establishment of high-level scientific innovative teams and two-way first-class talent introducing systems.
Mr. Zhu approved the progress JU has so far achieved in the recent years, and commented favorably that JU pioneered fruitfully in such practices as running the university with distinctive features, accelerating intensive development, and providing support for regional development. In his statement, JU, during its fast development, witnessed and propelled the local development of Wuxi.
Mr. Zhu extended his wishes that JU should adhere to its distinctive features and strengthen its comprehensive power. He also promised more and considerable support to JU from the local government. (Han)
