The curtain of the 24thOlympic Winter Games fell in Beijing recently with a big success. Enriched with Jiangnan elements, the gala on ice and snow showcased the contribution and concrete actions made by people from Jiangnan University through the design of the mascot Bing Dwen Dwen, visual appearance design of the uniform and participation as atorchbearer for the Olympic Winter Games.
A design team led by Jiangnan University alumnus gave birth to the mascot Bing Dwen Dwen of the Olympic Winter Games, which is warmly received by people around the world. After as long as ten months of design, modification and strict review by Chinese and International experts, the mascot Bing Dwen Dwen of Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 finally stood out from 5816 candidates.
The mascot revealed great creation and efforts of the design team led by Cao Xue, a well-known alumnus of Jiangnan University and dean of the School of Visual Art and Design at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts at present. The Chief Designer graduated from the Wuxi Light Industry Institute (formerly Jiangnan University) as an art design major in 1985 and served as a teacher in the Institute before he began to teach in the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in 1999.
Jiangnan University won the Outstanding Contribution Award for its potent support to the Organizing Committee of the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Games in successfully completing the collection and review of the visual appearance design of uniform. After receiving the task from the Organizing Committee of the Beijing Olympic Winter Games in 2020, the School of Design and related Department attached great importance and organized teachers and students to cooperate in the design work. Under the coordination of Professor Shen Lei, who was in charge of Fashion and Apparel Design, a number of teachers, postgraduate and undergraduate students presented comprehensive interpretation of the Olympic Winter Games elements and design concepts based on the design of costume for medal ceremony in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. The team from Jiangnan University received full recognition of the Organizing Committee and was conferred the most prestigious Outstanding Contribution Award among over 10,000 domestic design works for strong design strength, large quantities of design work, excellent design elements and high-efficient design collaboration.
The Olympic Winter Games bears witness to the high-spirited and vigorous appearance of Jiangnan University’s alumna as Lin Shiling, former English major of the School of Foreign Studies graduated in 2017, served as the 16thtorchbearer of the Beijing Olympic Winter Games Torch Relay in the Summer Palace. During her studies in English since 2013, Lin Shiling excelled both in morals and learning and was promoted Vice President of the Student Union of the School of Foreign Studies. After graduation, Lin chose to work for ANTA, where she was responsible for working with NBA stars in sports goods industry. After receiving a master’s degree in sports management from the University of San Francisco, she is now a researcher at the Center for Sports Industry of Tsinghua University, focusing onintangible cultural heritage of Chinese sports, sports poverty alleviation and others. In February 2021, Lin Shiling joined the third batch of the IOC Young Leaders Program and was recommended by the IOC as a representative to be a torchbearer for the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games, with a wish to call on young people around the world to get involved in sports undertakings.
